I believe this set to be from around 1939. I just picked it up for a pretty reasonable price.
It's in rough shape, I've used a little steel wool on the passanger cars to remove the rust and then sprayed them with
a lubericant. I haven't cleaned the engine or tender yet.

I would appreciated any advice you would share with me, if parts are available, what paint to use, some do's and dont's. This will be my first restoration project.

Enjoyed your photos. Thanks for sharing. My first train set was an early postwar (1946 or 1947) Lionel freight pulled by a Lionel Lines #1666 engine and tender. The tender had the newer postwar coupler and trucks. Around 1955 I had a 4X8 Christmas layout with the #110 Trestle set. My engine didn't have Magnetraction so, in order to get the 1666 up and over the trestle, I applied thin strips of Johnson & Johnson adhesive tape to all six drivers. Didn't know it at the time but I guess it was the precursor of the tires that come with modern engines. It still runs, but is now retired to "display only" service. The original consist was a gondola, a tank car and a red tinplate Pennsylvania caboose.

Peter, Thanks for sharing your story. My first train was an American Flyer back in the early 50's. A
It's a 4-8-4 #336 which I still have with all the original cars.
